Creative Writing Classes

I teach live, online writing courses focused on craft, publication, and generative exercises. These cover a variety of topics, especially those niche topics related to my experience as a comedian, performer, indie author, and experimental writer. You can find out more at CreativeWritingSpark.com!

Above all, my classes are compassionate spaces for clients to explore their interests without judgement.  I am a counselor in training with a focus in expressive arts therapy, so I prioritize mental health and safety in my workshop spaces.

I offer two types of classes:

  • Virtual craft lectures with live question-and-answer sessions

  • Multi-week group workshops in fiction and nonfiction

Craft Lectures

A writer’s greatest strength is their craft toolbox. Understanding things like narrative structure, humor, and figurative language makes it easier to recognize opportunities to strengthen stories and essays.

My virtual lectures delve into narrow craft topics like adding humor into serious nonfiction, dialogue, and how to select a great metaphor. These courses get into the nitty-gritty. I’m here to equip your toolbox with why great writing is great and how to create compelling work. These one-time online sessions also include a take-home exercise so you can put what you learn into practice right away.

I also offer select lectures on non-craft topics, including:

  • Publishing with small presses

  • Organizing an essay or short story collection

  • Getting comfortable performing your work

I also occasionally run free generative writing Zooms. If there’s a topic you’d like to see me cover, let me know!

Group Workshops

Unlike typical workshops where small groups exchange and critique each other’s work, mine emphasize craft analysis and self-review. As a memoirist, I’ve sat in too many classes where I bared my personal trauma only to be met with personal criticism and, often, little helpful feedback on my work.

Members of my group workshops collectively determine how a piece is succeeding within its own rules and do not focus on what’s “not working.” We analyze existing craft and apply our skills to become better editors of our own work.

Participants in these multi-week workshops will leave with at least one complete essay, story, or chapter ready for publication.

Writing Coaching

For those looking for more personalized attention, I offer one-on-one consultations, editing services, and tailored writing prompts. I recommend taking one of my workshops or setting up a free 30-minute consultation to see if coaching could be right for you.

Through analysis, goal-setting, thoughtful revision, and curated exercises, I help writers build confidence, routine, and writing success. No matter where you are in your writing career, I’m here to be your personal cheerleader!
